Expedition Overview

The patients of SEE International expeditions are underserved individuals in the area of the expedition who do not have access to eye care under ordinary circumstances. Host ophthalmologists pre-screen patients, both medically and socio-economically, with a complete medical history taken into account for all surgical candidates.

SEE expeditions are typically one week long.  All teams are invited by the Ministry of Health or a local health authority. Our international clinic coordinators work with the host ophthalmologist three to six months in advance to ensure the proper facility, pre-screening of patients, available equipment and supplies, support, staff, and other logistical details.

Traveling teams are composed of one or more ophthalmologists who will travel to the clinic site to assist in surgeries.  Donated supplies are sent to SEE affiliates in the U.S. and are transported by them to the clinic site.  All team members who are ophthalmologists, including the host, are asked to be SEE affiliates.
