This article touches on the various reasons why cataract surgeons should be comfortable with the Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) technique. Knowing manual incision techniques such as MSICS or Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE) can be useful for complicated cases, or when phacoemulsification is too dangerous. Additionally, many of the skills needed for MSICS transfer from phaco surgery, making MSICS relatively easy for cataract surgeons to learn.
