Dante J. Pieramici, M.D. is Co-Director of the California Retina Research Foundation, a partner at California Retina Consultants, Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Doheny Eye Center, and a SEE International Board Director. A highly regarded retinal specialist, he regularly trains ophthalmologists from underserved regions around the world.

Dr. Pieramici graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, completed residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute, and has held academic appointments at Yale University Eye Center and Wilmer, where he served as Assistant Chief of Service and Director of Ocular Trauma. He has published over 100 articles, 16 book chapters, and three books on retinal diseases, and lectures internationally on retinal disorders and ocular trauma. His research spans both clinical and basic science, with a focus on advancing treatments for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, and ocular injuries.

He has pioneered surgical innovations—including limited macular translocation and small-incision vitrectomy—and is active in developing novel drug delivery methods for retinal disease. Recognized with awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retinal Specialists, Dr. Pieramici is also a member of numerous professional societies and currently serves as Vice President of the American Society of Ocular Trauma.

Service with SEE International

Dr. Pieramici has an extensive history volunteering with SEE since joining in 2004 and as a Board Director from 2010 to present. He has donated his time and experience as an educator and surgeon for programs around the world. So far, he has participated in 6 programs, providing sight-restoring surgeries in Haiti, Honduras, India, Vietnam, and the United States.
