Lauren Shatz M.D. is a comprehensive in Northampton Massachusetts specializing in refractive cataract surgery and treatment of corneal disease. He has served his community since 2003 with offices in Northampton, Amherst and West Springfield.
Dr. Shatz earned his undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of Michigan before completing his medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He trained in ophthalmology at Boston University Medical Center and went on to complete a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute—consistently ranked the nation’s top eye hospital by U.S. News & World Report. Committed to delivering the highest level of patient care, Dr. Shatz utilizes the latest surgical techniques and state-of-the-art technology. He customizes cataract surgery with advanced intraocular lens options—including Toric, Multifocal, and Extended Depth of Focus lenses—to meet each patient’s unique vision needs and lifestyle goals. A regional pioneer of “Dropless” cataract surgery, he also has expertise in laser-assisted cataract procedures, advanced corneal transplantation, and glaucoma management.
Prior to his involvement with SEE International, Dr. Shatz participated in The Nevis Eyecare
Program delivering free eyecare to residents of Nevis in the West Indies.
Dr. Shatz has been a SEE volunteer eye surgeon with since 2013 and joining as SEE’s Board Director in 2022 to present. He contributes his time and expertise as an instructor for education courses and surgical programs around the world. He has participated in 14 programs to date, serving communities in Cambodia, Honduras, India, Jamaica, and Vietnam.
